Column for InStore Magazine: GS1 Standards – A Driving Force of Modern Trade

22/05/2025

In a column for InStore magazine, the President of the Economic Chamber and Chief Executive Officer of GS1 Macedonia, Branko Azeski, writes about the GS1 organization, which for over 50 years has been dedicated to the design and implementation of global standards for use in the supply chain.

GS1 standards provide a framework that enables products, services, and the information about them to move efficiently and safely—benefiting businesses and improving people’s lives every day, everywhere.

These standards bring together companies representing all parts of the supply chain—manufacturers, distributors, wholesalers, hospitals, carriers, customs authorities, software providers, national and international regulatory bodies, and many more.

They are used by both large multinational chains and small neighborhood shops, by globally recognized brands as well as individual artisans. These companies—whose interests often intersect—collaborate under our leadership to develop standards that make the supply chain faster, more efficient, less complex, and more cost-effective.

Within the GS1 standards system, there are three main areas in which the GS1 organization has developed and continuously works to maintain and enhance standards: identification, capturing and collecting, and sharing. In each of these three areas, in cooperation with companies worldwide, standards and tools have been developed that are freely accessible and open to all businesses. This is because the ultimate goal of our work is to enable seamless communication and collaboration between companies—without national or language barriers.

The full column can be read in the latest printed edition of InStore magazine.
