Fire Protection Conference: Joint Steps Toward Standardization and Safer Infrastructure

24/06/2025

The Economic Chamber of North Macedonia, in cooperation with the RNM Institute for Standardization and other professional and institutional stakeholders, organized a Conference on Fire Protection of Buildings. The event opened key topics related to safety, standardization, and the advancement of technical and legal practices in this critically important field.

The conference drew a wide professional audience—engineers, designers, technical inspectors, institutional representatives, investors, and members of the academic community. In their opening addresses, senior representatives from the competent authorities emphasized the need for close inter-institutional cooperation and the necessity of establishing a joint standardized framework for action. Particular focus was placed on improving current norms and increasing the practical application of fire protection measures, with the aim of raising safety standards and protecting human lives and property.
The technical part of the conference featured a plenary discussion involving representatives from relevant institutions and scientific bodies. The discussion focused on key challenges in the field, particularly highlighting overlapping institutional jurisdictions, insufficient alignment between laws and bylaws, and the need for precise and comprehensive regulation. Participants stressed that fire protection studies should be treated as essential documents—not merely prescribing technical measures, but reflecting a multidisciplinary approach that ensures the safety of buildings from the very beginning of their planning phase.
Concrete proposals were presented for improving institutional coordination and strengthening technical procedures in the processes of design, review, supervision, and inspection authority. The recommendations resulting from the discussions will be systematized and submitted to the relevant authorities and the Government, with the goal of encouraging structural reforms and developing more efficient fire protection policies.
The conference successfully achieved its central motto—to unite the professional and institutional community around a common goal: creating a safer, standardized, and more sustainable environment for fire protection. In doing so, the event made a meaningful contribution and sent a clear message: fire protection is not merely a technical obligation, but a social and professional responsibility that requires ongoing commitment, expertise, and a shared vision.
